Prune: You’ve had multiple roles on the big screen, but you’re most famous for your role as Clary Fray on Shadowhunters. Talk to me about Clary’s character.
Kat: Clary is a passionate strong willed red head who finds out on her 18th birthday that she is something called a “shadowhunter.” She’s discovered there’s a whole part of the world that humans can’t see, whether it be vampires, werewolves, fairies, demons, and every other manner of creature. She finds out she’s a very integral part of that world and is thrust in the middle of an impending war. As the series develops it’s really incredible to play this character because she’s grown so much, and she continues to change and learn. What I love most about Clary is that she is lost. She’s been thrown into this world with absolutely no preparation and so she doesn’t always understand the consequences, even though she has the best intentions.
Prune: At age 13 years old, you began your career in Broadway and starred in multiple shows throughout the years. Talk to me about that experience.
Kat: It’s been an incredible journey. It’s been a whole series of events and opportunities coming my way. It’s me taking a chance and saying yes and seeing where the industry takes me. I’ve been very fortunate. I’ve been able to do what I love for a living and had some really experiences, working with some incredible people.
Prune: What made you transition from Broadway to film and television?
Kat: It wasn’t a conscious choice. My show closed in New York and I started auditioning. Film and television is just kind of what happened. There were jobs in LA, so I went out there for a few months, and now it’s been six years because I’ve just been working, going back and forth from NY to LA and traveling to different locations – seeing where the industry takes me.
